How would you choose between....
keeping a roof over your head or putting food on the table?
a roof or leaving an abusive relationship?
a roof or childcare for your family?
All too often, when we think of homelessness in Calgary, there’s a separation between us and them. However, in reality, the women making these choices could be your neighbours, friends or family.
Did you know nearly 14,000 families in Calgary are at risk of becoming homeless this year?
Can you believe that last year, 806 women and 373 children stayed at least one night in a YWCA of Calgary shelter or housing program, and that most stayed with us much longer and accessed multiple programs.
Sally's story is just one example of many that speaks to the circumstances leading to homelessness.
History:
Over the past five years YWCA KEEP A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS® has raised almost $1,000,000 to help the YWCA of Calgary intervene, empower and lead when and where women need us most. We are grateful for the dedication and generosity of our sponsors, donors and past participants. Both RBC and Pengrowth Energy Corporation have supported this campaign through multiple years of sponsorship and to them we are ever thankful.
Background:
In 2012 the YWCA’s poverty reduction initiatives served over 3,100 women and their families with a focus on providing the resources and training required for them to transition out of poverty, increase personal capacity and experience greater social inclusion.
